Question by : I have a George v threepence australian coin that has the face looking sideways.?
On all the other threepenny australian coins I have seen the face is straight up and down matching the back. On the one I've got the face is looking sideways, completely the wrong way to all the other's I've seen. Do you know anything about this & if so, can you tell me what it could be worth?

It's probably fake because that doesn't seem like a reasonable mistake.

It sounds like you’ve got what’s called a “rotated reverse”.

When a coin is struck, the blank sits on one die while the other comes down and strikes the coin. If one of the dies is not properly tightened down in the coining press, it can rotate, and then the coins that are struck don’t have the images aligned like normal.

It’s actually a pretty common occurrence for one of the dies to be rotated. One tunred 90 degrees like yours is worth a little over the normal value of the coin, but not more than a few dollars at the most.
